Moving Checklist
8-9 Weeks Prior
- ✔️ Hire Movers or line up friends and family to help. If hiring a mover, confirm the coverage they offer.
- ✔️ Request time off work for moving day. Give yourself ample time to get everything moved and settled without the stress of work responsibilities sitting in the back of your mind.
- ✔️ Get started on home renovations. IF there is painting or major remodeling, you will want to get a head start of these right away.
- ✔️ Purge! Go through every room and begin getting rid of items you know you won’t need and decide what can be sold or given to charity.
- ✔️ If you have children in school, reach out to the new school for information on registration and transfer records if necessary.
6-7 Weeks Prior
- ✔️ Arrange to buy or acquire adequate boxes.
- ✔️ Create a list of family members, friends, or colleagues that will need your new address.
- ✔️ Contact your doctor, dentist, and vet and arrange to transfer your records to new providers.
4-5 Weeks Prior
- ✔️ Pack items that you need easy access to in an “essentials” box. Include things like toilet paper, soap, trash bags, chargers, box cutters, tape, tools, paper plates, snacks, towels, etc.
- ✔️ Contact utility companies and transfer or cancel service. Make sure they are aware of your move date and arrange for service and installation as needed for new services.
2-4 Weeks Prior
- ✔️ Change your address with the Post Office. You can go online to USPS.com. Don’t forget other important provider such as banks, credit cards, and insurance carriers.
1-2 Weeks Prior
- ✔️ Unplug, disassemble, and clean out appliances. Clean stovetop and oven thoroughly.
- ✔️ Ensure all essential utilities like gas, electricity, water, and internet services are ready at your new home.
Moving Day
- ✔️ Collect all keys, finish any touch-ups, and complete your walk-through. Do a final check of closets, cupboards, drawers, and any areas where items may have been stored.
- ✔️ Remove all garbage and recycling.
- ✔️ Leave your home sparkling clean and ready for the new owners.
